Sarouk

Sarouk rugs come from the Arak region of central Persia and are among the most beloved antique Persian types in the American market. Their hallmarks — dense, durable construction and richly detailed floral work — have made them a collector's staple for over a century.

The Farahan Sarouk, finely woven with an intricate all-over Herati or floral field, represents the most refined expression of the type. The American Sarouk, exported in large numbers to the United States in the early twentieth century, is instantly recognizable for its detached floral sprays on deep rose and red grounds.

The rarest and most prized sub-type is the Mohajeran Sarouk, distinguished by exceptional fineness and a softer, more naturalistic palette. All Sarouk rugs share a robust hand-knotted wool construction that wears beautifully over generations, combining formal Persian elegance with the durability to serve as everyday investment-quality furnishings.

At First Rugs, our collection spans antique examples across all three sub-types, selected by Ali Khaledi — a fourth-generation Persian rug dealer from Shiraz — for quality, provenance, and decorative impact.
