About Shirvan Rugs

Shirvan rugs are woven in the Shirvan district of the eastern Caucasus, in what is now Azerbaijan, and are among the most celebrated antique Caucasian carpets. They are distinguished by tightly woven, finely detailed geometric designs — intricate medallions, star motifs, angular floral sprays, and the characteristic S-border — rendered in brilliant reds, blues, ivory, and gold. Antique Shirvan rugs are highly prized by collectors for their exceptional fineness relative to other Caucasian types and for the lively, jewel-like complexity of their patterning.
