About Afshar Sumak Rugs
Afshar sumak rugs are woven by the Afshar tribal people of southwestern Persia, combining tribal artistry with the sumak flat-weave technique. In sumak weaving, wefts are wrapped around warps rather than knotted, producing a textured, tapestry-like surface with a distinctive raised pattern on the reverse. Afshar designs typically feature bold geometric medallions and stylized tribal motifs in jewel-toned colors. Each piece is individually woven and carries the spontaneous artistry of a living tribal tradition, making every sumak a genuinely one-of-a-kind textile.
Each rug at First Rugs is individually sourced — no two are alike. Natural variation in color and weave is part of what gives hand-woven tribal rugs their lasting character and investment value.
