About Indo Ikat Rugs

Ikat designs originate in the ancient resist-dyeing tradition found across Central Asia and South Asia, in which yarns are dyed in patterns before weaving begins. In hand-knotted ikat rugs woven in India, the characteristic blurred, painterly outlines of the motifs — an inherent effect of the resist-dyeing process — create an impressionistic elegance that reads as both rooted in tradition and thoroughly modern. Their fluid, abstract quality makes Indo ikat rugs a versatile choice for contemporary and transitional interiors seeking pattern with a soft, artistic edge.

Each rug at First Rugs is individually sourced — no two are alike. Natural variation in color, pile, and patina is part of what gives hand-knotted rugs their lasting character and investment value.
