About Sewan Kazak Rugs

Sewan Kazak rugs are woven in the area surrounding Lake Sevan in the southern Caucasus — in what is now Armenia — and represent one of the most celebrated variants of the Kazak tradition. They are best known for their bold central medallion, often a large "eagle" or sunburst design with serrated edges in brilliant primary colors, set against an open field with small filler motifs. Hand-knotted in lustrous highland wool with natural dyes, antique Sewan Kazaks are among the most sought-after Caucasian rugs for their graphic power and exceptional depth of color.
