About Serapi Rugs

Serapi rugs are the most refined antique weavings from the Heriz district of northwest Persia, produced largely in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The name denotes the finest, most decorative Heriz pieces, distinguished by spacious geometric medallions, soft rust and terracotta grounds, and ivory and sky-blue accents. Their bold yet gentle palette and durable hand-knotted wool have made them enduring favorites among collectors and interior designers, prized as both art and investment-quality furnishings.

Each rug at First Rugs is individually sourced — no two are alike. This particular piece, with its silk weft and warp dating to circa 1860, represents an exceptionally rare and early example of the Serapi tradition.
