About Melas Rugs

Melas rugs are woven in the Milas region of southwestern Anatolia, part of Turkey's long tradition of village and mosque carpet weaving. They are recognized for their distinctive niche or prayer-arch layouts, warm madder-red and ochre grounds, and bold geometric borders drawn from a centuries-old Anatolian design vocabulary. The hand-knotted wool has a soft, lustrous hand that develops a rich patina with age. Antique Melas carpets are collected for their village authenticity and the warm, graphic character they bring to a room.
