Karabagh

Karabagh rugs come from the old province of Karabagh, a historic crossroads region just north of the Aras river along the present-day Iranian border. Unlike most Caucasian carpets, which lean toward tight tribal geometry, Karabagh pieces are known for their expressive florals — oversized cabbage roses, peonies, and lush bouquets — alongside more traditional tribal geometric and medallion designs.

That range reflects a genuine cultural crossroads. Weavers drew on Armenian, Persian, and Caucasian design traditions, plus unusual French decorative influence carried through trade. The palette is softer and more varied than typical Caucasian work: rose, salmon, and soft green appear alongside the bolder reds, blues, and golds more familiar from Kazak or Shirvan weaving.

Structurally, Karabagh rugs are distinctive too — typically double-wefted with a Turkish knot, woven with a higher, more supple pile that gives them a plush, substantial hand underfoot.

Explore our current Karabagh selection, or visit our Acton, MA or Boston SoWa showrooms — our team, including fourth-generation Persian rug dealer Ali Khaledi, can walk you through what makes each piece distinctive.
