Bibicabad/Bibikabad Rugs

Bibikabad rugs take their name from a small village northeast of Hamadan, in western Persia — a region synonymous with sturdy, hard-wearing village weaving. Unlike most Hamadan villages, which favored runners and smaller scatter sizes, Bibikabad weavers have long specialized in large-format carpets and kellegis, or gallery rugs.

The design is immediately recognizable: bold, all-over patterning built from small, hooked paisley motifs and repeating geometric forms, often drawing on the Herati "fish" pattern common throughout the region. The palette runs rich and varied — deep reds, indigo blues, ivory, and warm earth tones — traditionally derived from natural dyes.

Construction is a hallmark of the type. Weavers use a thick, handspun wool pile on a sturdy foundation built to withstand generations of daily use, which is part of why these carpets remain collector and designer favorites alike.
