Hereke Silk Carpet
Virtually all finely woven silk Hereke rugs are in small sizes. This is one of the very uncommon large carpets executed in all silk, both pile and foundation, from a highly professional workshop workshop in Hereke, a suburb of Istanbul. The knot count is about 350 per square inch.
The beige field is centred by a brown ogival medallion enclosing an ivory and golden beige eight point device. Around it are secondary leafy pendants and serpentine cloud bands in a dense floral vinery. The brown corders are en suite with the medallion.
The golden tan main border is decorated with cartouches alternating with acanthus edged palmettes. Pistachio green and medium brown are the minor border tones and cloud bands feature in them. A narrow plain beige band and wide flatwoven ends finish this discreet, but opulent silk carpet.
This carpet is perfectly drawn and precisely woven, balanced in all directions. The reflective silky patina shows a strongly lighter overall tonality when viewed from the top end. The condition is exemplary. The pile is clipped short to better display the precise drawing and intricate pattern.
