Large Karabagh carpets were woven primarily in the district capital of Shusha rather than in the smaller, surrounding villages and this attractive creation is a testament to the artistic discipline of the weavers. On a rich, deep indigo ground are bunches of red and white roses, three complete and one half to each row. This is a realistic rendering of the classic Gol-i-Firangi (European Flower) pattern. Bright green leaves and tiny buds add to the realism. A narrow brown main border with a floating boteh and leaf pattern frames the whole. The long and narrow gallery format is a classic shape for many pre-1900 Persian and Caucasian large carpets rather than the more square Western layouts. The foundation is all wool with a pile in symmetric knots and all natural dyes. A date of c. 1910 is probably quite conservative and similar pieces has been dated well into the 19th century.
